Hi, my name is Kat Logan. I'm a 30 year-old in Lansing, Michigan who works at a non-profit neighborhood center. My passions in life include food, environmentalism, community building, and my partner, Megan.
On August 27th, I had an accident in which I cut off a portion of my finger and fractured the bone while using a food processor. Due to less than ideal health coverage, I had to pay a lot of my medical bills out of pocket to cover emergency costs, and the cost to see an orthopedic hand surgeon.
Though my work requires a lot of hands-on, heavy lifting, I was learning how to deal with both the financial and physical setback of this injury. It's hard to ask for help so often, but I was getting the hang of it and slowly starting to heal.
Then, on September 10th, while driving to my partner's house only a few blocks away - ready to go spend the day hiking and foraging - I was t-boned by a large SUV that was speeding and ran a stop sign. My car spun around and flipped over, and began filling with smoke. I climbed up and out of the passenger side door, and waited with dozens of neighbors for the police to arrive.
The car is now totaled. While I'll be fine other than aches and bruising, I am struggling with all the costs that are piling up between these two accidents:
- ER visit for the finger injury
- Prescriptions for the finger injury
- Consultation with the orthopedic hand surgeon for the finger injury
- Medical bills for the car accident
- Towing costs
- And ultimately the cost of having to buy a new vehicle.
I come from a low-income money, and have worked for the last decade at a non-profit neighborhood center; I have worked so hard to save my money, and am devastated at the physical stress, financial stress, and mental stress of my current situation.
It has always been hard for me to ask for help, but I can't help but look to my community to support me right now. Please consider donating to help me out - anything is helpful!
