Hi everyone,
For the past month my family has been traveling back home to help my mom, who had a major stroke, and dealing with the aftermath is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. It's heartbreaking seeing someone who cared for you, someone who taught you independence and strength, become as helpless as a baby, blind in an unfamiliar world who can't remember what happened 5 minutes ago. She was unable to move her right side of her body, but with rehab she has been regaining strength. Unfortunately we’ve been told her memory and eyesight aren’t likely to return, and she won’t be able to live independently ever again.
Healthcare in America is nonexistent for long-term care, and the reality is that we are lucky we have been able to be there for her the past month, but it's unsustainable. People without families are put on the street after medical events like this, and while that won't be the case for my mom, she also won't be in a world-class facility, let alone a nice one.
I'm sharing this because we've started a fund to help support her in addition to the family support we've already received. People have been asking how to help, and we haven’t really known how to respond. If you don't have the means to donate, please just keep us in your thoughts and prayers that she keeps recovering to become the woman she was before. If you can donate, it would help immensely, no matter the size of donation. We also would love any kind of tips if you have dealt with American gov't bureaucracy, stroke advice or navigating healthcare.
All funds will go towards her skilled nursing facilities. If we're lucky, after 6 months she'll be able to live in a regular nursing home and we hope her social security and disability will be enough to cover those expenses.
Thank you for everything, please hug your loved ones and cherish your moments with them.
