My name is Michaela Erskine and I’m writing this because on January 19th, 2026, my grandfather had fallen and broken his hip and was admitted into the Calais Hospital and stayed for 2 days and then was transported to the Bangor Hospital to see about possible hip surgery— he was not able to get the surgery because of the low success rate due to his heart; his heart is only working 30% and couldn’t risk it.
He was later moved to the Veteran’s Home in Bangor a few days after being in the Hospital and spent 2 weeks there getting help and physical therapy… he was improving until last Friday and had to be moved to the emergency room by ambulance because his hemoglobin had dropped from 11 to below 7 and needed a blood transfusion. Now he is still in the hospital because his platelets are low and may need a procedure.
The veteran’s home was only holding his room for 10 days and that ends tonight at midnight and will cost us $478 A DAY to hold his room. He NEEDS that room to continue making progress to get better and get the physical therapy he needs and he is looking at staying at the hospital until possibly next Thursday.
In the meantime my grandmother travels to and from Bangor every day to be with him and it’s a lot with gas.
They don’t know I’m writing and asking for help but I know how financially bad it’s made them.
Anything will help them and would appreciate so much.
