Gina DeGuzman is a lot of things.
- Gina is a mother -- to her children and to the innumerable souls to which she has given tender loving care.
- Gina is a beloved member of the community -- to San Diego and the Hillcrest community, especially.
- Gina is a champion -- of causes and dreams, big or small.
- Gina is a public servant -- by way of cooking our meals, serving our drinks, lending a helping hand, offering a ride, giving advice and perspective, and cleaning our homes.
Since the closing of The Caliph at the end of 2018, that last one -- cleaning our homes -- is what Gina has taken to as a means of maintaining her livelihood. Unfortunately, Gina's ability to work has been severely hindered by the symptoms and side effects of her cancer and treatments, respectively. In September, Gina was diagnosed with rectal cancer, and her particular case has had very difficult and painful complications. On December 1st of 2022, Gina began very aggressive chemotherapy, and it has taken a drastic toll on her body.
Gina needs our help to make sure her medical expenses do not become insurmountable. Financial stress can be the most taxing on the mind, body, and spirit; that's the last thing someone battling cancer should be facing.
I'm setting a starting goal of $10,000 with hopes that together we can exceed that number and show Gina DeGuzman how thankful we are for the profound, seemingly endless love, care, and kindness she has given us all these years.
With a heavy but hopeful heart,
