Hey! My name is James. I have been homeless since March 23, 2024, and I am raising funds to help escape this situation, or at least improve it.
For a bit over a month as of writing, I've been living in my car. Sold most of my stuff, ripped out all the non-driver seats and build a bed frame in its place.
I was hit with a series of unfortunate events:
- Had a heart attack scare and was hit with a hefty emergency room bill
- For other health concerns, I went on unpaid medical leave from my job at Activision Blizzard for 5 months. Emptied my emergency savings and maxed out my credit cards. (Disability insurance helped but only delayed the inevitable)
- During that time, I was in and out of doctors offices almost on a daily basis. Emptied my Health Savings Account and maxed out my credit cards.
- Was laid off from my job at Blizzard in December. Have been unemployed since.
- Four months of unemployment since the layoff, and counting.
Funny thing is that I moved to a better neighborhood and a more expensive apartment literally a week before all of this. Things were going well at Blizzard, it made sense at the time... Well go figure the higher rent was another nail in the coffin.
As you can guess, I made the decision to live in my car to help stabilize my life situation. I have to admit, not paying any rent makes a huge difference. A lot of people choose to go #vanlife and #urbancarliving because of how limiting paying rent can be... and I get that... but it's doing a number on my mental health.
I'm setting up this GoFundMe to help escape this situation, or at least improve it. My credit score, as you can imagine, took a massive dip and is now in the low 400s. That, alongside unemployment, makes getting an apartment difficult and finding roommates fairly difficult. I'm looking to raise funds to help grease the wheel, so to speak -- people are more willing to rent to you when you can pay extra rent upfront or a larger security deposit. That said, the plan might be to use the funds to live in a motel or Airbnb for a month or two (if I can find monthly options that aren't super expensive), or move to a cheaper city. Mainly, the funds will help open up options I don't currently have.
Any amount helps.
Thank you for your time ❤️
