Hi, my name is Pat and I’m starting a GoFundMe for the Marion County Record (Kansas) to pay for any legal expenses the newspaper might incur as a result of the illegal seizure of the newspaper’s assets. I’m just a guy a thousand miles away with absolutely no connection to Eric and his publications (beyond being a fan of free press) that read about the event early and for some reason it really chapped my butt. I’m old enough to remember the ‘60s and the Nixon days and thought I had several options, most of which were basically poking at windmills. After setting up the page, the news only gets worse. Every dollar raised (minus whatever GFM takes) will go to the cause. I’ve spoken with the paper and they’re aware of the fundraising effort. Update:

For those of you possibly wondering why the recipient has changed from Eric to Emily (Bradbury), he has asked that the Kansas Press Association (https://kspress.com/) handle the multiple donor sites (there are more than our initiative involved, as expected) on his behalf as they continue to fight the attack on the Marion Record’s offices and reporters.

October 17, 2023 update:

After some fits and starts coordinating multiple players (Eric at the Marion Record, Emily at the Kansas Press Association, and the staff at GoFundMe), we’ve finally managed to get the funds transferred!

My thanks to each of you, regardless of the dollar amount involved, that chipped in to help. Regardless of our political affiliations (I can’t believe I’m saying that!), a free press is a critical part of a free country, and the fact you reached deep into yourselves and made your voices count is reassuring. My final request is we all stay vigilant to guard our freedoms. Oh, and vote! (Okay, that’s two requests but hey…)
