I met Dixie 25 years ago when my oldest child was not even two months old. I worked the night shift and needed child care. For the last 30 years, she has centered her life around taking care of other people's children. Most of us have met her and become lifelong friends because of her relationship with our children. Dixie has always been more than a caretaker to our kids. She also invested emotionally in the welfare of her clients. If she found out one of her families was in need, she found ways to help them. I remember getting a call once to see if I could help get a single mom with three kids a car. Their car had broken down and cost more to fix than it was worth. But the mom couldn't get to work and had no way to drop the kids off or pick them up from daycare. Dixie secured the mom a good used car. Another time she gave me a call because she discovered a single mom with two kids that had a good apartment but no furniture. They all slept and sat on the floor. She not only fully furnished the apartment, but she also filled the cupboards in the kitchen. Dixie has been diagnosed with an anaccaroid cyst in her brain, causing headaches, dizziness (extreme vertigo), serious balance issues, and vomiting. It is time for us to help her. She is currently on a waiting list for surgery, pending finding a surgical team who will accept her insurance. The surgery is very invasive and needs to be performed in a medical center hours from her home. Because she has not been able to work as much as usual and her symptoms are getting worse, she has lost her job and it could be months before she can get the surgery she needs. We can help her offset travel costs and the loss of income. Any donation you can afford would be greatly appreciated. Dixie has quietly helped others over the years and, for many, has taken care of our children like they were her own. During this time, when Dixie is struggling not only to work but even just stand up and walk, let's give a little back to her.
