Introduction
Hi, we are Faisal Rehman and Bajuna Salehe, and we’re raising funds to launch an AI-driven early detection platform for multiple cancers—a tool We believe could save lives
We live in a world where nearly 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime (Cancer Research UK, 2023). Despite advances in treatment, early detection remains our most powerful tool. When cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, the chances of survival increase dramatically—for example, over 90% of early-stage breast cancer patients survive compared to less than 30% when diagnosed at a late stage (American Cancer Society, 2024).
That’s why we’re building a startup focused on AI-powered multi-cancer screening, beginning with a prototype that uses blood-based protein expression data—a less invasive and more accessible alternative to traditional biopsies.
What Are We Building?
With the rise of AI in medicine and the availability of vast genomic and proteomic datasets, our team has trained preliminary models using open biomedical databases such as TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) and GTEx (Genotype-Tissue Expression Project).
The results so far have been very promising:
- We’ve developed three initial machine learning models showing high sensitivity in detecting lung, colorectal, and oesophagus cancers using protein expression data.
- These models are based purely on open-source data, proving the feasibility of a scalable and accessible approach.
The next step is to build a working prototype.
This prototype will consist of:
- A web-based interface where users (e.g., researchers, clinicians) can upload blood sample-derived expression data.
- An AI-powered backend, hosted securely in the cloud (AWS, DigitalOcean, or GCP), to analyse the data and return early diagnostic insights, risk probabilities, and visualisation patterns.
- A focus on ease of use, data privacy, and scalability for integration with healthcare platforms.
Why This Matters (Backed by Science)
Cancer isn’t one disease—it’s over 200. The dream of detecting multiple cancers with one test is no longer science fiction. Recent breakthroughs like GRAIL's Galleri test (2022), which can detect 50+ cancers from a single blood draw, show how liquid biopsy and AI are changing the landscape. However, access and affordability remain challenges.
Our mission is to develop a timely, cost-effective, open-data-based alternative that can be adapted globally.
Research has consistently shown:
- Early detection improves outcomes and reduces treatment costs (World Health Organization, 2022).
- AI can enhance the accuracy and reduce human error in diagnostics (Topol, Deep Medicine, 2019).
- Protein markers—unlike genetics ones—are directly tied to disease activity, making them especially useful in real-time diagnostics (Petricoin et al., 2004).
Where Will the Money Go?
We’re seeking to raise £10,000, which will be allocated as follows:
- One front-end developer – to design a secure and intuitive user interface (20% ~ £2,000).
- One back-end developer – to build and deploy the AI-powered engine that handles data preprocessing, inference, and result delivery (30% ~ £3,000).
- Cloud computing resources – for model deployment, scaling, and secure data handling (30% ~ £3,000).
- Further testing & validation – ensuring our models hold up under realistic conditions and data (20% ~ £2,000).
This prototype will be the foundation for future clinical testing, regulatory review, and eventual patient-focused applications.
