Donate to help cover the cost of Rocky's heartworm treatment

Tax deductible
For those of you who viewed, shared, and donated to our Dixie fundraiser, thank you so much! Rocky came into the shelter just a few days after Dixie, and sadly he was in even worse shape than her. He was severely underweight at only 43 pounds, covered in sores, and also heartworm positive.

After months at the shelter spent getting the love, care, and food that he needed, he’s gained over 15 pounds, grew a shiny coat over his open sores, and is healthy enough to start his heartworm treatment.

So, Dixie and Rocky are starting their heartworm treatment journey together. We’ve raised the funds for Dixie, and now we’re hoping to raise the funds to help cover some of the cost for Rocky’s heartworm treatment as well.

Treating heartworm positive dogs is a long and expensive process. According to this regular volunteer, with no degrees, and whose tasks are usually walking dogs and cleaning up after them lol, this is the process:

  • It starts with a medication given twice a day for 28 days, and starting a special heartworm prevention for heartworm positive dogs. During this time they need to start restricting activity to leash walks, with no running or rowdy play. Dixie and Rocky have already started this process, and will finish their 28 days on April the 15th.
  • The second month they continue with their heartworm prevention and activity restriction.
  • The third month they continue with their heartworm prevention, receive their first heartworm treatment injection, receive another round of medications for the next 28 days, and have to be on an even more restricted activity of only taking walks for their bathroom breaks.
  • The fourth month they continue their heartworm prevention, get two heartworm treatment injections given 24 hours apart, continue to receive medications, and have to continue on the extra restricted activity.
  • The fifth month they get a blood test, and if they come back clear, they get their activity restriction lifted back to leash walks.
  • Five-Eight weeks after their last injection, they can resume normal activity…and we will all run around to celebrate!
  • Six months later they will get retested, and then stay on heartworm prevention as they live happily ever after.

So, the beautiful Dixie’s treatment is covered (thank you, thank you, thank you!), but if you could help us work towards our goal for the handsome Rocky, we would all really appreciate it. He is such a happy, loving, and playful boy who deserves more than the life he’s had so far. Thank you all in advance for helping us to help our wonderful shelter animals.
