I’m sure as most of you already know, my mother Christine Stayton suffers from Neurological Chronic Lyme disease, taking away her ability to walk. Unfortunately, the CDC doesn’t recognize Lyme as a chronic illness meaning it is not covered under ANY insurance. This results in any sort of office visit, treatment, or therapy expenses coming strictly out of pocket. This disease has caused constant struggles for my mom on an everyday basis. Daily tasks we all consider simple are a constant challenge for her. Putting on shoes, making the bed, cooking, getting into a car, and just standing up are all done with assistance. As a child, my siblings and I watched my mom slowly decline. It started with walking with one cane, then two canes, then a transition to a walker, and she is now fully in a motorized scooter. Doctors constantly told her she would be wheelchair-bound if she kept fighting to walk but as resilient as she is, she never gave up. Years of physical therapy, hyperbaric treatments, medicine pumps, countless surgeries, and doctor visits later, her Lyme disease still hasn't shown any sign of surrender. Although the disease progressed and continued to take away more and more, her optimistic attitude stayed at an all-time high. We have hope that a new treatment option can bring some form of normalcy back to her life. But as a single mother of five, treating this illness is impracticable. A new treatment has been the talk of thousands of chronic Lyme patients, being referred to as “a game-changer”. Disulfiram, which has been used to treat alcoholism, has been changing the lives of so many Chronic Lyme patients and has been a breakthrough for others with similar struggles. The money constantly spent on replacing walkers, scooters, medication, vitamins, and other therapies makes the non-insurance-covered doctor appointments and necessities for this treatment difficult. We were at a point a year ago in which we finally thought we would be able to start her on this new medicine until March 22nd, when life threw us a major curveball. A car fire that resulted in the complete loss of a fairly new car with equipped hand-controls, and silly valuables such as wallets and cell phones. Although we both remain eternally grateful to have only lost the materialistic things, the fire was a major setback financially and emotionally for us and left her medical needs being pushed away as per usual. For everything she has and continues to do for our family, we owe it to her to attempt a treatment that’s been considered life-changing. As most of you probably know, my mom is never one to ask for help. My mother truly deserves this chance and we can’t wait to hope to see her dancing with family and friends when this is all over. My mom has been attempting to treat this illness for 30+ years, trying multiple different medications, treatments, and new doctors which have all been, of course, out-of-pocket costs. We want this to be the last time our mom turns down an opportunity due to financial boundaries. We want finances to be the last thing occupying her mind, so she can finally have her chance to walk. That is why we are inviting anyone to give financially to help towards my mother's healing journey. Please feel free to share this fundraiser to help support her. We can’t wait to share updates on this journey with her new treatment once she gets started!
