Okay, after having some time to sleep I just wanted to take a moment to explain what happened to my mom Chandra McMillan Behrenz this weekend.
We were staying at a cabin and at 4am she woke up to use the bathroom, being that she was in an unfamiliar place she went to the wrong doorway. She leaned in with her right arm looking for a light switch and stepped forward with her left foot. She ended up falling down the angled staircase that consisted of 15 tile stairs and landed on the basement tile floor. Ryan Halvorsen and I were in the basement, and woke the the fall and her crying out. We found my mom sitting on the basement floor bleeding from a large wound to her head and an obviously broken left arm. We assisted her to Andrew L G Hunter’s vehicle where Angela D Hunter called EMS to meet us en route. I was able to travel with my mom via ambulance to Tisdale where she received several X-rays, pain medications, and attempted suturing to her scalp. Due to a very large hematoma her scalp sutures we re-opened. It was discovered she had an open left elbow fracture that was temporarily casted for transfer to RUH.
Once again, I was able to transfer with her via ambulance. At RUH she received a CT of her head, neck, and arm. It was determined that her left arm required emergency surgery and she had a small spot in her brain that was possibly a calcification but due to her large hematoma and scalp laceration, a bleed in her brain couldn’t be ruled out. They did a repeat CT head Sunday which showed the same.
She had surgery on her left arm Sunday morning and is now on the ortho floor at RUH. Her scalp is now sutured and dressed and the hematoma remains. She ended up requiring an additional CT of her kidneys and spleen which we have not had an update on as of yet. We also discovered today that she damaged the tissue and skin connecting to her left femur. As of now, they are keeping an eye on it.
As you know I’ve started a gofundme which I will share again here. She is going to be off work for quite some time to recover and no one who is healing from injuries should have to worry about the financial impact that not being able to work can have. If you can donate to support please do. If you would like to help with a meal train please message me as well.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us so far by messaging and donating. And a very special thank you to the staff who have taken amazing care of her. It’s so scary to be on the other side of healthcare. I appreciate all of you!!! ❤️
