My name is Carter Young. I’m a 23 year old kid who went to welding school, enjoys personal fitness, and working in a shop. In spring of 2022 I finished welding school at Ozarks Technical Community College with a certification in Stainless Welding Technology. I went on to earn a spot on the production floor of a fortune 500 fabrication shop making biopharmaceutical tanks. I was doing some hard work, getting into weird positions and lifting 100+ lb objects all day. I would go home with terrible back pain. I tried everything to help it but before long it was to the point that I would look at other kids my age and wonder “Why am I unable to keep up?” Whether my job was to be bent over all day or lift something heavy, it was awful. I tried a well known chiropractor in town and changed my workouts to accommodate but nothing helped. I knew this work was hard but I was getting paid well for my age. I stuck out a 90 day break in period, but after 4 months with the company, I decided I couldn’t endure the pain anymore. Thinking about my future, I got back into school to work toward my gen ed requirements in search of higher pay. I had shown myself I could learn something if I just applied myself. In order to save money I moved back in with my parents, and sold the old car I had fixed up and fallen in love with. As I started school and looked for a new occupation one thing never changed, my incredible back pain. I began to notice pain and swelling in my left testicle. When I mentioned it to my doctor she expedited me on the process to find out if I had cancer.
October 31st I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and in the same week I underwent an MRI on my torso finding a two and three eighths inch tumor in my back. In November I underwent an orchiectomy to have my left testicle removed. While recovering, I waited 3 weeks and 5 days for pathology to return. I have non-seminoma testicular cancer. Chemotherapy may not completely treat the tumor in my back, so there’s a possibility I may have to undergo another surgery after chemo.
After recovering from the initial surgery, knowing I need a small amount of income and to keep myself busy, I told myself I need a job. The problem is, I can’t stand without incredible back pain. I am doing my best to stay busy with school, and searching for a job to suit me. Until then anything helps - Carter
