Hi, my name is Judi and I am fundraising to help my sister Barbara pay for out-of-pocket expenses related to a kidney transplant. Barbara, our friend or family member, is living with end stage chronic renal disease. She is on the precipice of dialysis. She is doing all that she can to prevent further loss of her kidney functioning through diet and exercise, but further decline is inevitable.
BUT...
- A miracle has happened! Barbara is being given the gift of life through a living donor transplant. Receiving a kidney from a living donor is the best possible treatment available. While not a cure, it is the only option that offers the chance to live a longer, healthier life.
- The Nephrology Transplant Team will perform the surgery on January 15th, 2025 at the London Health Sciences Centre, the designated kidney transplant centre for Sault Ste. Marie. Barbara will need to relocate to London with a support person for a minimum of 30 days as she must be close to the Centre for at least two medical visits per week for monitoring and in case of any medical event requiring urgent care.
- The Ontario Health Insurance Plan covers the cost of the surgery and related medical costs, but does not cover associated costs for this period: accommodation, food for her and a support person, gas for hospital-home medical appointments and trips to supports and going to/coming from the surgery, and parking, estimated to be about $8,000.00. Barbara has negotiated a medical rate for the accommodation which will allow for cooking meals and which is close to the Centre.
- Barbara has applied for assistance through all known programs but there is a limit to the type and amount of support provided. Any assistance you can offer to help cover these costs will go a long way to share your support and reduce the stress of financial debt caused by living so far from the transplant centre.
