Since January 2021, Sherry and Jeff have been looking for answers. What appeared to be a slight swelling in Avery’s eye turned into Bell’s palsy within a year of the first symptom. After putting Avery through a borage of tests, MRIs and CT scans, we finally found Felix (the name we gave her tumor) on May 22nd of 2023.
After a biopsy in June, Avery was given a diagnosis of a benign facial nerve schwannoma. Being that this tumor was benign, a treatment plan of watch and wait was put in place.
As Avery’s symptoms continued to worsen, her parents continued to look for answers. We reached out to our networks, sought out second opinions, and we once again found out Avery was misdiagnosed and did in fact have cancer.
Her diagnosis as of today, is a facial nerve synovial sarcoma.
The course of treatment is total resection and facial nerve reconstruction with grafting to be done at the time of surgery, which is predicted to last up to 9 hours.
Avery will need to remain in the hospital for a few days and then further treatment will be discussed with oncology. The doctors want to run more pathology tests on the mass once it is removed to make sure the correct course of treatment is given. This surgery will be taking place December 8th at Johns Hopkins.
With huge financial expenses beginning to compile quickly, we hope our community will once again rally to help Avery and her parents!
