My name is Cecile Jackson, I am a professor at a UK university and I am raising money for one of my postgraduate students - who I shall call Farzana. This is not her real name, for security purposes. Farzana is an Afghan woman who is stranded in the UK whilst her family is experiencing the horror that is life in Kabul since the Taliban took over in August 2021. She has worked for women's rights in Afghanistan for years, but her job now no longer exists under Taliban rule, and as a gender activist and professional she would be a Taliban target if she returned. There is currently a terrible humanitarian crisis in Kabul - no food, no employment, no law and order, and kidnapping is rife. Even indirectly, people associated with the West, like Farzana's family, have to regularly move home to dodge Taliban persecution.
Farzana's support for her family is vital for their survival, as they have no wage earners now, and all the funds raised by these donations will be sent to Kabul to support her family whilst she establishes her position in the UK and can get permission for them to join her. I know Farzana very well and I vouch for her.
This is how Farzana explains her situation....
'I am a woman from Afghanistan currently studying at UEA. I worked with national and international organisations in Afghanistan advocating for women rights and women’s political and social participation. I came to the UK for doing my master's degree with a vision to return back to my country and serve my people. However, the current political situation not only washed all my dreams, but also put me and my family in an extraordinary situation. I had no other choice but to seek protection in the UK. My family is stuck in Kabul. Two of my siblings had to leave the country and immigrated to Turkey and my brother and little sister (who is a female boxer) along with my parents are stuck in Kabul with no access to cash, job and economic support. Because of my sister affiliation with sport activities, my family is suffering terribly from the current situation and became the target of unknown agents which became catastrophe for all of us.
I am writing to you to ask you to support me and my family. Just a small donation can help my family to survive the current situation.
