Donate to help Allison (Fairbanks) Hughes

My name is Annette Fairbanks and in an effort to support my sister in law and brother in law, I am reaching out for help in their current medical journey. What started as a family vacation in the Dominican Republic quickly turned into a nightmare and a desperate need to get back to the USA. A couple days after arriving in the Dominican, Allison was feeling ill. She ended up in the hospital there, very dehydrated. After an overnight stay, she was released to rest at the hotel and get on a plane back as soon as possible. While back at the resort, she spiked a high fever and became very disoriented. They rushed back to the hospital (via a taxi because no ambulances were available). Minutes after getting to the hospital she had a major seizure and ended up in the Dominican ICU. Though we believe they were giving her the best care they could, they don't have the resources like we do in the States. After 34 hours in the ICU, fighting a battle like no other, she was FINALLY able to leave in an air ambulance to come back to the states (Miami). Upon arriving in Miami they have made her stable but continue to run into bumps in the road. The current goal is to get her stable enough to come back to Minnesota where she will continue doctoring with a hepatologist to investigate a liver infection which they believe to be the root of a lot of her current complications. Though we don't have a lot of answers at this point, we are celebrating the small victories of being back in the States and working towards a more stable condition and to start feeling MUCH better.

 

This is at the start of what will likely be a marathon, instead of a sprint. What has gotten Allison and Patrick this far is the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, strangers in an airport, medical staff and each other. We are calling them/you angels along our journey. They do not like to ask for help in any capacity. They have, however, realized through this is the importance of a village.
