I am sending this note to the Scholarus Family with a hopeful heart, and permission from the team member to share her story. Alexis McCree, Inside Sales at XanEdu, is navigating a devastating health issue. Her journey has been a long one which began on New Year’s Day 2023. Alexis went to the emergency room as she was experiencing shortness of breath and swelling in her legs. Upon examination the health professionals found what they thought was a blood clot in her leg. In their efforts to treat the clot they realized it was not just one but hundreds throughout both her legs. This condition required extremely invasive surgery, leading to the removal of significant amounts of tissue to gain access to and remove the clots. Her condition also required the medical team to check her heart to ensure no clots had reached or were blocking arteries leading to her heart. During this procedure, it was discovered that Alexis was born with a hole in her heart, further complicating her recovery.

Her recovery has been slow with several complications the most serious setback was a severe infection in her right leg that led to an amputation of her leg just below the knee. While still not completely out of the woods, the good news is that Alexis is progressing and is headed in the right direction. However, her recovery will be slow and challenging and her life has forever changed. Her new reality will mean modifications to her home or a move to a more accommodating living situation which will need to be addressed in the very near term and her return to work and a regular paycheck are at best months away, which is why we have started a Fundraising campaign to assist Alexis and her family through what will be a long and costly recovery.
