Alaina Heavens Proof Martinez, a single mother of three, needs your help! An organizer for many years with The Leaders Rights Organization, Alaina has always been first in line to serve her community. She’s been integral to Sarasota's Black Lives Matter movement and has served the homeless meals biweekly for years. One could not find someone with a bigger heart and passion for helping those less fortunate in Sarasota. And that’s why we must rise to help in her time of need!

 

 

Her vulture slumlord, who is also a *codes enforcement special magistrate* is attempting to evict her and her three children because she has been reporting significant issues with the house. The problems stem from negligence on the landlord's part, including dilapidated plumbing, pest infestations, and pre-existing mold, which landed her son in the ICU. When a tenant reports issues, and the landlord responds by raising the rent by $1,000 and terminating a lease, it’s retaliation and illegal in Florida.

 

In February, the plumbing issues got so bad that feces came from her toilet and bathtub. She and her three kids had to get a hotel, which the slumlord reluctantly paid for. After this, intimidation ensued. She was given a notice of lease violation for minor things like not having a title for her truck, which the slumlord had gone out of their way to check. Another “violation” was temporarily having an emotional support animal, which she quickly gave away to a family friend.

 

Last month, she reported the mold that sent her son to the hospital. The landlord issued a mold inspection and still has not given her a copy of the report. On June 1st, they sent her a notice saying that her rent will be increased by $1,000 effective August 1st. On June 7th, a note was taped on her door saying her lease was terminated immediately due to the mold. This mold has been in the house since before she moved in.
