My name is Dammy, a few people know me as Sarah, and I am writing this with a heavy heart about my husband, Abib, who has been battling a multifocal intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumour (EWSR1 rearranged) – a rare and aggressive cancer.
Abib first became unwell in 2023, when he first started complaining of weight loss, abdominal distension and altered bowel habits. After many hospital visits and tests, including scans, blood tests and a biopsy, He was then diagnosed at age 33. My husband’s diagnosis is extremely rare. Since it was first described in 1989, fewer than 200 documented cases have been recorded. Because this tumour is so uncommon and aggressive, there is no established cure; outcomes remain very poor, and the longest survival time recorded so far has been 5 years.
Since then, our lives have changed completely. Despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy and blood transfusions, the cancer has continued to worsen. He has now been placed on palliative (EOL) care; he is not receiving any further cancer treatment , and we’ve been advised to start making preparations – words we were not prepared to hear.
It is with deep sadness that we share that Abib has passed away.
Abib fought courageously, and he was surrounded by love and care every step of the way. He will always be remembered for his strength, his kindness, and the joy he brought to those who knew him.
This fundraiser was originally created to support Abib during his illness, as his wife became his full-time carer and was unable to work. Now, it will continue to help his wife during this incredibly difficult time as she adjusts, grieves, and handles the financial burdens that follow such a loss.
Thank you to everyone who has supported, prayed, shared, or donated. Your kindness has meant more than words can express.
Please continue to share, donate if you are able, and help us honour Abib’s memory.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness, compassion, and prayers. Your love and support are helping us get through each day.
