Before his accident our son, Aaron Glave, was a bright young software engineer living in Fishers Indiana. He enjoyed watching anime and one of his favorite past-times was playing trombone in the Hamilton County Community band. On August 21st, 2022 he was on his way home from band rehearsal when he was in a horrible car accident; his car was hit broadside at high speed on the passenger side. His head hit the driver’s side window, his skull was fractured and he sustained a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Many of the nerves in his upper cerebral cortex were severed – the adult version of shaken-baby-syndrome. Shortly after he was admitted to the hospital he suffered many setbacks including Covid-19, staph infections, double pneumonia and two collapsed lungs – which all served to delay his recovery.
Through all of this, he has medically progressed and is now breathing on his own. At this time, he is virtually a quadriplegic, although, he has recently starting gained some purposeful movement in his legs and arms mostly on the left side of his body. He continues to breathe through a tracheostomy tube and is unable to speak. He can track us with his eyes and uses a “quick blink” for “yes” and a long blink for “no”. His accuracy in responding to simple yes/no questions in addition to his ability to focus and attend to conversation indicates that he is aware and comprehending our conversation. Just as he is beginning to make some gains in his ability, insurance has indicated they would be discontinuing therapies due to lack of progress. An appeal with insurance has been made and is ongoing but they will inevitably stop coverage because of his slow progress.
Because the known facilities that have the ability and experience to treat TBI patients would not take Aaron due to his low neurological abilities, he is currently in a skilled nursing / subacute rehabilitation facility and receiving some basic therapies. These therapies are not the specialized treatment that a patient with TBI requires. Currently, we are seeking a neurologist that can provide direction for treatment specific to this area, as well as the additional therapies needed, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for his best chances of recovery. Recovery from TBI could take years, but his insurance has cut him off. TBI is rarely predictable and it’s impossible to know how long his recovery will take; therefore, ongoing rehabilitation is likely to become quite costly.
