I met at Hannah in August of 2000. I had moved to South Dakota from Delaware to teach art on the Pine Ridge Reservation . Previously, I met her family when I made a trip to the reservation to deliver clothing, fans and various other items to needy people. I became friends with their family. Hannah and her brother Tasina came back to Delaware with me to attend school for the year. Her father wanted them to get off the reservation to see what life was like elsewhere. They stayed for the school year and then returned to the reservation in the summer.
After ten years I moved back East but stayed in touch with Hannah over the years. She grew up, had a family but was plagued with illness and hard times. Hannah discovered that she and her siblings and inherited a kidney disease from their mother she recently discovered that her 14 year old daughter Selena has also inherited it.
In May 2024 Hannah Moves Camp graduated from the United tribes Technical College in North Dakota. It took her ten years due to health problems, a sick mother and deaths in the family before her graduation. Hannah's mother died of polycystic kidney disease that Hannah inherited. Previous to her graduating her mother died of of the disease. She graduated in May, unfortunately her father was too ill to attend. Not long after her father died. He had committed his entire live to his tribe as a medicine man and is missed.
She has been waiting 3 years for a transplant and she finally got her call in July! Regrettably her brother Two Hoops did not receive his call in time and passed away last year . It's a shame her parents did not live to see her receive her new life.
Hannah had to go to Sioux Falls, South Dakota from the Pine Ridge Reservation to get her transplant, which is a 5-hour drive. This is a hardship for her and her relatives as they rarely have a reliable car or the money for gas. Hannah has made it through her surgery and is released to a recovery unit where she has to stay until the 15th of August. She's very thankful for her new lease on life and so are five young children who are being shuffled around with her relatives.
When she finally returns home in Pine Ridge she will have to make weekly trips to Rapid City for blood work. At present her car is not working she cannot afford to get it fixed, nor can she afford the gas.
Through it all, Hannah has shown extraordinary extraordinary determination and grace. This trial has only deepened her resolve to make the most of every opportunity for both herself and for her loved ones as she looks to the future. Hannah hopes her story will inspire others facing daunting medical and personal challenges to keep going no matter what the obstacles. Her journey is a testament the power of perseverance and the strength found in family and the healing that comes in a community rallies together.
Today Hannah continues her recovery and strives to honor the memory of her parents and her brother who and stays committed to giving back she dreams of helping others, who like her are waiting and hoping for a second chance in supporting the journey you are not only uplifting one individual by contributing to the legacy of hope and solidarity which is beyond a single life.
It is a two and a half hour drive to Rapid City from Pine Ridge she needs to get her car fixed and she needs money for gas. She's hoping to raise $3,000 to make her car repairs and cover the gas. Help Hannah recover from her transplant so she can finally pursue her career that she fought so hard to earn in college.
Every contribution, no matter the size, brings Hannah closer to stability and healing, the road ahead will not be easy, but together we can ease her burden. By supporting Hannah you're investing not only in her health and future but in her resilience and hope for her entire community,. Your generosity will help her reunite with her children and continue her dream of serving to advocate justice and positive change for her tribe.
