Meet little miss Honey Bee. Honey’s life is important, her life matters. She wants to live and deserves that chance. But she needs your help.
Honey was found in November by a kind man. He thought he was moving a dead kitten off the road, but Honey was alive. She was literally frozen to the pavement. When she was brought into Mending Hearts Animal Rescue (where I’m an active volunteer) she was convulsing. She was drooling uncontrollably. She was covered in more filth and more fleas I could ever count.
The second I saw her I fell deeply in love with her. I decided I needed to take her home, warm her up and try to help her survive the night. Flea by flea, heating pad to warm bath, hug after kiss- she pushed through.
She never acted like a “normal” cat, she was special. she had some neuro issues that we assumed was damage from being frozen. Unfortunately in January we found out she has a liver shunt. This means toxins are not filtered and instead, fill her tiny body with poison. We have been giving her maintenance meds which helped better her quality of life. This is not a permanent fix, this is not even a short term fix. Honey needs life saving surgery.
Let me explain this kitten. To know her is to love her (obsessively haha). She is merely 4lbs at almost 10 months old. She is the cutest creature ever, with her little tongue always sticking out. She only knows love. She is gentle and sweet. She loves being cradled like a baby and we happily oblige. She follows us around the minute she wakes up til she goes to sleep. We fight over who gets to hold her. She loves her kitty siblings. She loves her lime green mouse. She whips her tail all around and squints her eyes when you talk to her. She loves her family very much. Since she started meds she learned how to purr and pounce around. She is so special.
This cat WANTS to live. She survived on the streets of Altoona as a tiny 2 lb kitten, covered in fleas, frost bitten feet, starving, with an untreated liver shunt for the first time 6 months of her life. She had to be peeled off the road, frozen. But she didn’t give up. She fights every single day. She is so strong and so brave. I’ve never loved anything like I love this girl.
In January, based on her condition, she was not a candidate for anesthesia to do the CT scan to verify if the shunt was even operable. They referred her to Pittsburgh internal medicine. That vet quoted us $2600 JUST for the CT scan. And quoted us another $10,000- $15,000 for surgery. This money was due up front, unable to do this, we lost hope.
So we waited, nurtured her, loved her, gave her meds on a strict schedule, and did all we could to help her gain strength until we could get a second opinion from our vet, Ebensburg Animal Hospital.
Yesterday we got the call that they felt she could handle anesthesia for the CT scan. And she did. She made it through step 1 where we verified it is indeed a liver shunt. We got the best news possible, it IS operable. This doesn’t mean they can save her for certain. They gave her a 60% chance of survival during surgery. It’s such a delicate, hard procedure and she is so very fragile. My amazing vet agreed she is worth it and if we decide not to do the surgery, he would recommend euthanasia as she is suffering. But we’re choosing to fight.
Ebensburg Animal Hospital is the greatest vet I could ever ask for. I can’t tell you all they do for my pets and us. I would trust them with anything. They want to save Honey just as bad as I do. They offered to do the surgery, including meds, imaging, tests, supplies (which have to be specially ordered for her due to her tiny size) and the surgery itself for just under $3000.
If you know me, you know I dedicate my life to saving some of the most vulnerable animals. I love all living creatures and will do anything to help them. Unfortunately, I am just not in the financial position at this time to provide the amount of funds required. I absolutely hate asking for help but I will swallow my pride to try and save her. I am begging for help. Any amount helps. You can donate via this gofundme, to me directly using my Venmo, PayPal or cash app. Or you can call the vet itself to donate to my account (under Tracy Lloyd)if you can’t donate, please send us love and share this with others!
I thank you from the bottom of my heart and will pay it forward everyday for the rest of my life.
