Hi, my name is Eric. In July of 2022, I was hospitalized; all I remember is going to the ER and being admitted. Apparently, I passed out. I vaguely remember my family talking around me and someone asking if I wanted to do something to save my life. I said yes, and then the world was gone again. When I woke up, 4 weeks had passed, and I couldn't move or speak. To top it all off, I now had a tube coming out of my neck. As it turns out, I had CO2 poisoning, and if I had waited even another day to go to the ER, I probably would have died. The procedure I had agreed to was a tracheostomy, which allows oxygen to flow directly to my lungs through a plastic tube in my throat.
While I was unconscious for 4 weeks, my muscles atrophied, and I lost the ability to walk and, for some weird reason, move my right arm. So, I have spent the past 2 years in nursing homes relearning how to talk, eat, move my arms, and walk, among other things, although I'm still working on the walking part. I have had a few setbacks along the way, but I'm still fighting to get my life back to when I was at my best.
Now for the hard part. I have always had a difficult time asking for help, but I need it now. My medical bills are growing a little bit faster than I would like, and I may not even be able to stay in the nursing home I'm in for rehab. So, I'm asking for any help that can be given to ease this financial burden so that I can focus on my rehabilitation and go home when I am ready, not before.
