It has been almost 3 years since we found out that our youngest son, Finn, had a brain tumor. Since then he has undergone several uncomfortable treatments and surgeries including a 10+ hour surgery in Memphis last year to attempt to completely remove the tumor. This surgery caused residual deficits including left side weakness and Third Cranial Nerve Palsy. Recovery hasn't been speedy but nothing slows Finn down!
After researching things we could be doing to optimize his recovery, we came across the Bioness L300:
"The Bioness L300 Go is a functional electrical stimulation (FES) system designed for individuals with foot drop, which is a condition causing difficulty lifting the foot during walking. The system uses a lightweight leg cuff and 3D motion sensing to precisely trigger low-level electrical pulses that activate the nerves and muscles, helping the user lift their foot and walk more naturally and with increased stability. The wireless system includes a control unit for adjustments and can help reduce falls and potentially eliminate the need for an AFO (ankle-foot orthosis)."
Several things make it exciting for Finn---It can help with fatigue and speed, there will be less stumbling and tripping, he can be barefoot or wear any shoes he likes, and what I think is the coolest part, it can help with his recovery and can even eliminate the need for the device in the future as it helps the brain to rewire and use the correct muscles.
The device is expensive and insurance covers nothing. We have decided to get the device as soon as possible in order to get Finn the maximum benefit of this recovery time. We have sincerely appreciated your help in the past and are again so grateful for any assistance in purchasing the device for sweet Finn.
