A little bit about me and my story:
Hi, my name is Rachel and I’m seeking help to obtain a service dog for my disability. The picture you see above is me in my adulthood, loving on a past pet in his old age. After losing him to cancer, my family, doctor, and I decided the best next step would be a service dog, as I am dealing with worsening symptoms related to my diagnosis. In childhood, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy with motor apraxia and generalized hypotonia (low muscle tone). I did well in managing symptoms, including muscle weakness, pain, and muscle spasms, due to certain supports such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and in-school supports under the IEP plan. However, in adulthood, my condition has changed, and I now have chronic pain, more muscle spasms, and worsening balance issues. My hope in getting a service dog is for them to be trained to specifically provide directed pressure (reducing pain from spasms), retrieve items I cannot reach due to the inability to bend, and provide some mobility support so I can reduce the risk of falling. This would help me have the best quality of life possible and would help keep me more independent.
Although I am working, the extensive medical costs I have for my health condition do not allow me to spend extra money for this need. The cost of a service dog once fully trained is estimated to be near $25,000.00, which is a very large expense. This amount will cover the price of the dog and all the training needed; all donations will go to cover the cost associated.
How you can help:
Every donation will go towards ensuring I have a chance at the best quality of life possible. Even if you are unable to donate, sharing my story would mean the world to me. I greatly appreciate all of the support!
With gratitude,
Rachel
