Support Matthew in his brave fight against epilepsy.

Epilepsy has a profound impact on one's life, affecting countless aspects that only become truly apparent when you or a loved one is suffering from the debilitating symptoms. I vividly recall watching my cousin Matthew experience his first seizure during a soccer game. An exceptional athlete, he suddenly stood still, frozen in a blank stare that marked the beginning of a lifelong journey none of us were prepared for. Matthew has been courageously battling epilepsy since the age of 12 when he was diagnosed with focal and tonic-clinic seizures. His condition was skillfully managed with medication until the end of 2024 when his seizures started to escalate dramatically, defying treatment from any medication. With medication no longer effective in controlling his seizures, brain surgery appeared to be the sole remaining option. Matthew underwent numerous tests and procedures in preparation for his operation. In an effort to pinpoint the origin of these seizures within his brain, he underwent three brain surgeries in May 2025, followed by the final procedure which involved implanting the Responsive Neurostimulation System (RNS) in July 2025.
The Neurostimulation System (RNS) is a device that continuously monitors brain activity, detecting abnormal patterns and delivering electrical pulses in an effort to prevent seizures. This device may require up to a year for full collaboration, resulting in ongoing daily seizures for Matthew.
Matthew had a remarkable career operating heavy machinery, a profession to which he was deeply devoted. Unfortunately, he is currently unable to work or drive until he receives medical clearance.
Despite his efforts, disability benefits continue to elude him, resulting in a lack of income and causing significant financial strain. The emotional impact of this experience has been profoundly debilitating.
Matthew received a significant boost of positivity when a family member informed him that they were graciously gifting him with a service dog, professionally trained through Glad Wags, located in Oklahoma. Matthew is required to make two trips to Oklahoma to meet and bond with the dog, having already completed one trip. To facilitate the dog's training, Matthew has been sending mouth swabs taken during seizure activity to the service animal, which then uses these samples to learn the scent associated with seizures, enabling the dog to alert Matthew of an impending seizure and retrieve rescue medication. Matthew's second and final trip to Oklahoma is scheduled for January, during which he will spend a week completing the training and bringing his dog home. Upon their return, the dog will require a specific diet. The presence of this service dog will provide Matthew and his loved ones with not only enhanced safety measures but also a considerable sense of relief.

Matthew's selfless nature has consistently led him to prioritize others' needs before his own, never hesitating to offer assistance. However, his current situation has rendered him feeling helpless. We are reaching out to our exceptional community, friends, and anyone who feels compelled to support Matthew during this difficult time. If you are in a position to contribute financially to assist Matthew in retrieving his support dog and alleviating some of the financial burdens caused by his health issues and the mishandling of his disability benefits, we would be eternally grateful. We understand that not everyone may be in a position to give, and we request that you keep Matthew in your thoughts and prayers above all else.
