Elijah has been battling a chronic illness since he was 9 years old. Since his diagnosis with epilepsy, he has overcome many challenges. He became a merchant marine at the age of 21 and has traveled as far as Japan and Guam. However, he was diagnosed again in 2019 with sarcoidosis (an autoimmune disease affecting his lungs). Despite pushing himself to continue on with life, work, and fatherhood, his lung disease has severely progressed, and he is now in need of a double lung transplant at the age of 27 years old. Elijah is currently in the evaluation and pre-transplant phase that requires him to have daily multiple appointments and is now required to relocate close to Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
