Our son Tyler is a single father of 4 school-aged boys. Several years ago, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. He went through chemotherapy early on, which got rid of the cancer until recently when it reappeared. The treatment this time went a different path, and he has spent this fall undergoing extensive chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant at the UW Hospital in Madison. This treatment included 7 straight days of chemo, which effectively killed any cancer cells in his body. However, it also killed his immune system and all the good bacteria your body needs, leading to complicated GI issues.

The entire process had Tyler in Madison for almost 4 weeks, with no visitors besides his mom, and no chance to see his boys in person. The stem cell transplant appears to have been successful, and Tyler is once again at home, but he has a long recovery ahead of him. With no immune system currently, he can only spend limited time with his children, and he must be extremely careful when he is around anyone, as his body is not yet strong enough to fight a cold, the flu, or any other minor illness we take for granted.

All in all, Tyler has a long, promising road ahead of him toward a full recovery, but he is facing an enormous amount of medical bills. His employer has been extremely helpful, allowing him to work from home, but he has struggled to even keep up with his regular expenses.
