My childhood/lifelong friend, Susan Slaughter Gaskin, is going through a tough season. She has been dealing with tough issues for 27 years, but right now the situation is overwhelming her. Since she retired in 2019, she has continued substituting to supplement her retirement and because she just loves working and teaching children. Because of her treatments and the problem she had with blood clots, she has not been able to work as much as she would like to and/or needs to. This has left her with overdue bills, more medical bills coming in, and the expense of gas to be able to get to Birmingham frequently. Also, she has discovered that several of the medicines she is taking are causing cognitive issues. Susan trusts in God and is a hard worker, but she needs help. God has put it on my heart to try to help her by getting her some money right now to help ease this situation. If you think you can help, please give. If you can't give, please pray for my unselfish, giving friend.
I am attaching Susan's description of her cancer so everyone may understand it better:
27 years ago, I was diagnosed with Muir-Torre Syndrome, a rare genetic cancer that has wiped out 5 generations on my paternal side. I lost my dad after an 8-month battle, at the age of 45. I lost my mama 8 years ago to Glioblastoma brain cancer. There are only 200 reported cases of Muir-Torre Syndrome, so there is no research going on to find a cure. They have determined it doesn't respond to chemo/radiation. It actually has the opposite effect and causes death in 6 months to a year. Thankfully, Immunotherapy is showing progress with Muir-Torre, and I've been receiving treatments for a year. I have had some issues with it causing inflammation in my colon, which has been resectioned twice due to malignant tumors. We've had to stop treatments and treat the inflammation twice. The cancer has basically been all over my body. I have internal visceral tumors, soft tissue tumors, and surface tumors. It has metastasized to the lymph nodes under my liver. The entire cluster was removed. It most recently was in my kidney. It required surgery twice in 2 weeks to get clear margins. As of today, I have had 52 cancer surgeries in 27 years. Due to the fact it has metastasized into lymph nodes, it is presently Stage 4, and the prognosis isn't good. God has kept me here long past the initial 6 months to a year diagnosis. He's allowed me to raise my 3 children as a single mom while teaching public school kindergarten for 38 years. I have often said I was blessed with cancer. While there have been many challenges and dark times, there have also been huge blessings. I've lived to see all my children grown and successful and my 2 grands graduate and find their place in life. I retired after 38 years of teaching and still substitute in the system. I have had some recent issues. After the second kidney cancer surgery, I had a severe reaction to a medication called Dilaudid, which caused some cognitive issues. Most recently, I had a blood clot in my groin and was confined to bed rest for 7 days. I am seeing my general surgeon, my oncologist, my neurologist, my urologist, and my cardiologist on a regular basis, as well as my immunotherapy treatments and regular full-body scans and probes. I average being in Birmingham about 10-12 days per month seeing doctors, having treatments, and tests. I appreciate and covet each and every prayer for myself and my family. Cancer is a horrible disease, but God has graciously allowed me to stay here for 27 years, and hopefully, I've been a good steward of that time.
