My name is Melissa. I’m 31 years old. This year in March, I was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. I have had one busy year of how my cancer was discovered. I had gone to several doctors about a pain in my stomach that continued to get worse. Eventually, I got a scan done that showed I had a mass on my ovary, but they assumed it wasn’t cancerous, so they put my surgery off for a month. I tried to wait patiently, but the pain got worse every day, and my stomach started expanding to the point where I almost went to the emergency room. At that point, it had only been 2 weeks, and I still had several more weeks to wait. I called the doctor's office and begged them to see me. The pain was so bad I was crying on the phone. They got me in 2 hours later and rushed me into emergency surgery. I woke up in a hospital bed and was told they removed the growth and 4 liters of unknown fluid. They sent both items out, and days later, it came back positive for cancer. I was a mess, and I couldn’t believe it. I’m too young for this to happen. Turns out that it was genetic and rare to happen to someone my age. After that, I went through several fluid removal treatments because the fluid kept coming back after a few days. Luckily for me, I had been given a nurse navigator to help me with finding doctors and helping with appointments. I have gone through 8 treatments of chemotherapy. As of now, I’m on a 2-year treatment where I go in every 3 weeks for an IV maintenance chemo paired with a daily medication to help my cancer from spreading and to keep my cancer gene quiet. In August, I went through my debulking surgery and a complete hysterectomy to reduce my chances of the cancer spreading. So, I lost the ability to have kids of my own. And as I was recovering, I had my car getting repaired at the shop, but it had been totaled out by a mechanic that didn’t know what they were doing. I had to take a loan out for a new car. So, besides paying for doctors and medication, I now have to pay for a car and full coverage car insurance. I’m struggling financially and I am asking for help. I stress out about my finances every month and about my health. I’d like to worry a little less and try to enjoy my life. Help me worry less.
