On April 18th, my mom went in for a surgery that we expected to take her 2-3 days to recover and return home from. After this surgery, my mom experienced severe complications that led to a second emergency surgery one week later. Ultimately, this resulted in the removal of portions of her colon and small intestines, meaning she would now have to live with an ileostomy. For those that don't know, an ileostomy means that a portion of her bowels are brought to the surface of her skin and attached to an external bag that collects waste. While this is a big adjustment, it was something we knew Maggie could recover from and still maintain a great quality of life. She spent 18 days at Bryan. She returned home, hoping that she could begin her road to recovery, but in less than 48 hours, we were back in the Bryan Emergency room because she had developed sepsis and couldn't eat or drink anything without getting violently ill. As of now, she has undergone numerous procedures, labs, and surgeries and continues to fight to overcome not only internal infection but an external wound infection at her incision site.
I am creating this GoFundMe because during her stay, her insurance was canceled, meaning there will be an immense amount of debt when she's finally able to go home. She also has not been able to work during this time and was unable to do so prior to surgery due to a hip injury.
All I want is to see my mom thrive and recover with one less thing to worry about. The stress of such a financial burden can weigh heavy on anyone, let alone someone who has experienced as much as my mother has over the last month that she's been admitted to the hospital. Anything helps. I just want to ensure that she is comfortable and able to provide for herself during recovery and focus on what matters, her health and strength.
If you know my mom, you know she is a fighter and she has proven this time and time again, but especially throughout this fight for her life from what should have been a routine surgery. Each day is a rollercoaster and I just want to see the light and life back in her eyes EVERY day that we all know and love so much.
Anything helps, even just sharing her story. Thank you so much.
