For those of you that do not know, Karen was in a car accident on October 4th. Thankfully, the accident did not injure her too badly—some busted ribs—but in going to the hospital, being seen, tested, and diagnosed, it revealed some lung issues that at that time were not showing symptoms but would have started to make themselves known over the next couple of months. So now, with the ribs injured and these newly found lung issues, they put Karen in ICU for a couple of days to make sure the ribs didn’t move or puncture her lungs, which we now know to be weakened. She got downgraded out of ICU days later. She did her physical therapy to learn how to move without aggravating her ribs, and after a week, was sent home. She was so happy her doctors said she could return home and that they had a positive outlook on her making a full recovery.
After two days of being home, she started having trouble breathing and was becoming mentally foggy. I had to call 911 and had her taken back to the hospital. We found out she had developed pneumonia while in the hospital that went undiagnosed and untreated. Due to being on low-level oxygen and being given steroids to help strengthen her lungs during her stay at the hospital, once away from all that, the pneumonia got worse rapidly. She was checked back in but is not able to get over the worst of the pneumonia.
Over another week in the hospital, doctors said the best thing would be for her to go to rehab and continue with PT and meds for the pneumonia. Once she is finally rid of the pneumonia, she can wean off the oxygen. In a few days, it will be a month of dealing with this, and the pneumonia is still hanging on, even with physical and respiratory therapy three times a day. She is now having to deal with the depression of having this illness turn into a long event on top of the fear that what happened to her brother will happen to her. All she can think about is when her brother had a stroke, he went to a rehab that was amazing and was helping him to the point she was getting ready to go down to be with him when he got home. That was until his insurance ran out and he was moved to another facility that should not have the responsibility of taking care of a goldfish, let alone a human being. They neglected him to the point in a matter of a few days he died.
I have assured her I will not let that happen, but with being handicapped and having my own medical issues, she knows money is already tight. Now, with these medical bills (that will not be covered by the accident insurance as they have been deemed non-related), the prep for her medical needs when she gets home, and the current household bills, things are beginning to strain an already overwhelming situation.
Our family humbly seeks any help from our wonderful family, friends, and community, no matter the size. Your support means the world to us, and together we can ease some of the mental and financial strain that is now being added to this heart-wrenching situation.
Please keep Karen in your thoughts and prayers, as we pray together for her strength and healing through challenging times. Thank you.
