Hello. I am 40 years old. I have had a shortness of breath since November of 2024. I have been pretty active, like doing most things around the house, played sports when i was younger, worked at a job where I had to pull decently heavy pallets dozens of times per shift, so I was very active before 3 years ago, but now have basically a desk job where I make parts for machines for GE Healthcare. I got smoke inhalation from my vehicle in July 2024, and it took awhile for the symptoms to go away. So having a shortness of breath, I thought was leftover from that. But then my other symptoms went away, but still had the shortness of breath. Along with the shortness of breath, I was also getting very light headed, where even walking 50ft made me feel like i was going to collapse from my legs going numb and feeling like i would pass out. Literally taking the trash to the curb and coming back in, a 150ft walk at the most, i had to lay on the couch to get feeling back in my limbs since they went numb like your fingers do when they get too cold, my vision and hearing were nearly gone, and my heart was pounding harder than ever. Went to the doctor at the end of February of this year, he found nothing wrong even after an EKG being hooked up and listening to my heart and lungs. But he did send me for blood tests. The morning he got the results back, he called me and told me i needed to go to the ER instantly, because my hemoglobin, red blood cells, and platelets were super low. When I got to the ER and they saw my results, and took blood to verify, they said they were surprised i could even walk, let alone still go to work, and function how i was functioning. I ended up getting 2 pints of blood that day, which happened to be my girlfriend's birthday, and I was in the ER for 9 hours. 3 days later I met a hematologist, where they found my nunbers were still low, so I got another pint of blood. After 3 weeks, getting my blood sent off for different tests, and getting my blood drawn twice per week, I got my diagnosis of Hairy Cell Leukemia. Normally very easy to treat, but it was estimated that I have had it for 1 to 2 years, so I need chemotherapy. I am literally typing this 9 hours before I get my first chemotherapy treatment. It is planned that it will be a total of 12 treatments over 8 weeks, with the first week starting today at 10am(it's 1am as i type this), which will be a treatment for 5 days in a row(4/28 thru 5/2, followed by once per week for 7 weeks. This gofundme is to cover the remaining cost that my insurance doesn't cover. I have had a social worker at the hospital help find grants for me, so far I have gotten 1 to help with the bills and cover the remaining cost of the 2 prescriptions i need during my chemotherapy.
I have had some pretty big bumps in the road during my life, and honestly I wouldn't even say this is the worst one, but it's going to be the most costly bump I've had. I honestly don't know how much this will cost, but my insurance is an 80%/20% split, so ill be responsible for 20%. I dont have a lot of money, as i JUST refinanced my house to pay off all of my debts last summer. Thank you very much and i appreciate any and all help.
