I have a dear friend on the East Coast that went in for surgery last week for a torn retina, only to have the surgery cancelled. They discovered she has cancer of the eye. Now she has to wait for her insurance (Medicaid??) to approve a full body scan to determine if it’s spread.
She is on a fixed income, and one of the first things she said to me was that she wouldn’t be able to participate in the community garage sale. She had been working so hard to get everything ready, and was excited to earn some extra money to help her.
Now it’s evident that she won’t have that extra $$ to help, and instead she will be incurring more bills for the treatment she will need. Update: She will probably need to board her dog, and fly to Philadelphia for treatment.
I was trying to brainstorm on how to help with my own limited funds, and had this crazy idea.
A virtual “garage sale”. If my friends would sponsor to “buy” any item she was going to sell, she will be able to have her garage sale proceeds, and donate the actual items to a local charity. Kind of a pay-it-forward thing.
Is this doable? Honestly, if enough people committed to “buying” an item for $1, $2 or any amount, really, this would be such a huge help, and would be so appreciated. Any amount would help!
Thank you. This woman is a very special person, and I would love to take away at least the financial stress of this situation.
