My name is Ellen. I am 70 years old and a widow. I have been fighting a very rare cancer by the name of cutaneous t-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for many years.
Last year my oncologist started me on a chemotherapy that was very helpful but I had to stop because the cancer center gave me inaccurate information as to my co-payment responsibility. I was told that that I would have to pay a large amount but told them that I couldn't afford it and wouldn't be able to take that drug. Shortly after, someone from the cancer called me and said she had been mistaken, the true amount would be a fraction of what I'd previously been told. So I started the treatment. Then I received the full bill for $3260. I asked financial aid department if there was co-pay assistance. I was told no. Since then, I've been struggling to pay a little each month. As of the most recent bill, they want payment in full or a payment plan. They want $130 a month so I can pay off the total bill in two years. I don't have that amount. I tried to negotiate the down but was told that wasn't possible.
I am a low-income senior in HUD Senior Housing. I only have about $50 is savings.
Cancer treatment is very expensive. Costs of food, etc are skyrocketing. I am finally recognizing and accepting that only the generous people who support those in need can help me, even if it's a small amount.
Thank you for reading this.
