Just one day after welcoming beautiful baby Alessia into the world through another incredible home birth, our family was faced with an unexpected challenge. Alessia was admitted to the NICU due to breathing difficulties and diagnosed with a condition called Laryngomalacia—a congenital softening of the tissues of the larynx that can cause airway obstruction.
She’s stable and making progress every day. Alessia recently graduated off CPAP and is now on Vapotherm support, with her oxygen levels improving steadily. She’s transitioning from tube feeds to mouth feeds, and we’re hopeful she’ll tolerate this well. Her oxygen tends to dip when she’s upset or lying prone, but today’s update brought a huge sigh of relief—she had no desaturation events all night!
Her condition is the result of a combination of factors: a slightly tighter airway, a small jaw, recessed chin, and a tongue that pushes back—what doctors have called “the perfect storm.” The good news is that as Alessia grows, her airway is expected to open up and these episodes should fade away. She’s expected to remain in the NICU for about three weeks.
This has been an incredibly emotional and difficult time for Brittany, Joe, and their 3 other amazing children. To make matters more stressful, the hospital where Alessia is receiving care is out-of-network, meaning all medical expenses will be paid out-of-pocket.
We’re asking for your help to ease the financial burden so Brittany and Joe can focus on what matters most—being there for Alessia and supporting her healing journey. Every donation, share, and prayer means the world to us
