Who I Am and Why I’m Raising Money

My name is Rob Sanders, and I’m raising money for my lifelong best friend, Doug Rowland.

Doug and I go way back. Our fathers were both Head Residents at Eastern New Mexico University — mine at Eddie Hall, his at Chavis Hall. We grew up together, went to the same schools from elementary through college, played sports against each other, sometimes even shared classes, and we’ve stayed close ever since.

Through the years, Doug has been my rock. He’s helped me with everything — my taxes, giving me a place to stay when I needed it, listening to my wild ideas, and always being there as a true friend. Now it’s my turn to help him.

Doug is currently in Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. When I came to visit him three weeks ago, I was shocked to see the condition he was in. After speaking with doctors, nurses, and social workers, we believe there’s a plan that can help him stabilize, recover, and improve his quality of life. But he can’t do it without support.

Doug’s journey hasn’t been easy. Up until 2005, he was thriving in both the cell phone and mortgage businesses. Then, a series of major spinal surgeries changed everything. His first surgery required doctors to cut from his sternum to his neck, move his heart and lungs, and place a cage around his spine. He was placed in a medically induced coma for 12 days, and since then, he has endured 13 surgeries on his back, hips, and neck.

Despite all of this, Doug fought hard. Just two years ago, he was walking with a cane and even swung a golf club again. But today, he’s battling stage 4 pressure sores and the complications of his long medical history.

I am asking for your help to give Doug the care and support he needs. With your donations, we can follow the plan his medical team has developed and give him the best chance at recovery. I promise to document Doug’s progress and share updates as we fight this battle together.
