My 17 year old brother, Destin has been diagnosed with two forms of thyroid cancer. The doctors called it an incidental finding when he got into a car accident which ended in the ER, during this time they found a spot on his thyroid. Destin was planning on playing football for his senior year at Pekin community high school but things changed. On August 20th he had the left side of his thyroid removed & it was sent off to be tested. On Sept 23rd he was seen by the surgeon & our family was given some bad news. He tested positive for papillary thyroid carcinoma & metastatic cancer spread through his lymph nodes. The next plan of action is to remove the other part of his thyroid & give him iodine radiation. He will have to be on replacement medication for the rest of his life & we are hoping the radiation will kill the rest of the cancer cells in his lymph nodes. He will be following up with his specialist for more testing in the future to check on the cancer & his thyroid. Not only is my brother playing catch up with school & having to miss out his senior year, his mom is having to take off work without pay & they have a family of 5 to support. They’re receiving lots of medical bills through all of this. I’m asking for any donations possible to make this heavy time in our families lives easier, even $1 makes a difference. Thank you.
