We are asking for your love and support for Derek, Brooke, and their 9 month old daughter, Wrenley during this extremely difficult time. Derek has recently been diagnosed with a Grade 2 infiltrative astrocytoma. What started as massive headaches, episodes of dizziness, and confusion/memory issues led to an MRI, revealing a tennis ball sized brain tumor. Derek and Brooke went to the University of Iowa hospital to have a brain biopsy performed. After a few long weeks of waiting and more appointments with oncology, radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery at both University of Iowa and Mayo Clinic, the infiltrative astrocytoma was diagnosed.

Derek will be having surgery on October 31st, 2025 to remove as much of the brain tumor as possible. He will be woken up during surgery, in order for surgeons to determine how much of the tumor they can safely remove. They will be operating around the area that controls memory, speech, and motor movement on the right side of the body. Recovery time will be at least 6 weeks after surgery if all goes smoothly. Brooke will be off work during this time caring for Derek and many appointments will follow the surgery. Derek is currently trying out a new FDA approved IDH inhibitor in order to prevent growth of the tumor. Eventually he will undergo chemotherapy and radiation once the inhibitor stops showing success.

It is our hope to relieve as much financial stress for Derek, Brooke, and Wrenley during this time, allowing Derek and his family to focus on the most important thing: fighting this tumor and healing. Derek is currently unable to work anywhere due to the conditions of the tumor and it is unknown when he might be able to return to the workforce. Financial donations would help ease the cost of surgery, medication, chemotherapy/radiation, gas expenses to and from appointments, groceries, and any other expenses Derek and Brooke have during this time.
