My dad fell off our roof last month trying to be the man he's always been, "the guy that takes care of shit." He is a wonderful, big hearted and awkward man… and I love that awkward dude. It's hard to wrap my head around him being the independent man that I'd go see movies with, to watching him fade in and out of consciousness from the pain meds he's on. One accident can change your whole life and your family too.

He's currently at a rehabilitation center in Newport News, Virginia recovering from two surgeries. Although he has  3 screws implanted to fix his vertebrae and some sensation has returned, he still can't move his lower limbs. On top of that, he also had surgery to remove blockage in his lower intestine caused by the fall. Right now he's struggling with internal issues, and his spine is still healing so rehab is limited. His spine needs to remain completely straight in order to not re-injure himself.

The insurance company is expecting the rehabilitation center to discharge him, even though he is unable to lift himself from the bed to a wheelchair.  His doctors have filed for an appeal, and are hoping it will be honored.  In addition, the medical leave provided by his Federal job is due to run out soon.  His supervisors are soliciting any Federal employees to donate some of their leave time until he is able to work from home via Tele-connect.  The official paperwork has been submitted by his supervisor, but the paperwork may take between 1-30 days to process. If you or any friends/family are employed by the Federal Government, and are willing to donate any leave please submit form OPM 630B directly to: VLTP DLA Customer ColumbusDHRS-[email redacted].

My dad’s full name is McNewton Sullivan, Jr.

Additionally, our parents home is not equipped for handicap accessibility. My mother has started the process of looking into building a ramp, and a variety of things he will need to move about the house.  The equipment is not fully covered by their insurance, so they will have to pay out of pocket for those items (medical bed-he will be unable to go upstairs for awhile if he is discharged on October 31st; ramp for wheelchair, portable shower, wheelchair and walker).  We are asking for monetary donations to help us purchase the medical supplies he needs.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact me ([email redacted]) or my sister: Shaunda Jones at [email redacted].

Expected costs:
Rehabilitation Center - $295/day = $1,770
Skilled Nursing Facility - $167.20/day up to 100 days = $16,720
Medical bed - TBD
Ramp for wheelchair - TBD
Portable shower - TBD
Wheelchair - TBD
Walker - TBD
Additional help within the home over two visits per week - TBD
Transport costs - $295/ride

My family truly thanks you for any support and well wishes. It's going to be a journey but we're believing he'll walk again and back to being old awkward MacDaddy. Thanks again.
