Donate to Curvy Girls: Noa's Mitzvah Project
Tax deductible
For my bat mitzvah project, I decided to raise money for an organization called Curvy Girls. Curvy Girls helps girls who have scoliosis feel better about themselves, and to just talk about the struggles they go through everyday. One struggle is having to wear a brace.
I was diagnosed with Scoliosis at the age of 8, and throughout the years my curve has gone up and down and way back up again. My curve started at 26 degrees, and that's when the doctor told me to start wearing my brace. I wore my brace for almost 2 years. After my curve got so much better I didn’t have to wear my brace for a year and a half before it got worse again.
I think the worst thing about wearing my brace back then was probably how embarrassed I felt about it and how self conscious I was. So that is why I am donating to Curvy Girls to try and give more opportunities for girls that feel the same way I felt, I want to give them the chance to talk about those struggles and to make it feel more normal for them to feel this way. Any girl that wants these tips to make them feel more confident about themselves and about wearing a brace in public can get that from Curvy Girls.
I wish I would've known more people who felt the same way as me, and had to go through the same thing I did. That's what Curvy Girls is. “I wanted to talk to other girls who were going through the same thing — feeling alone, different, angry about their brace” Leah the founder of Curvy Girls says. To help support the girls, they also have national conferences, where they offer books and resources to help educate the kids and families about Scoliosis, “We give each other clothing tips and talk about regular stuff that teenagers talk about. Most of all we support each other so we don’t feel alone.”
