Back story:
Steve went to the emergency room in Macon on January 24 with extreme pain in his kidney area… all signs pointed to a kidney stone.
Unfortunately, the prognosis wasn’t a kidney stone but a tumor growing ON his kidney. There were only 2 hospitals that could handle his care, and only 1 with a room available. So, he was transported to Savannah.
Once Steve arrived in Savannah, he met with the urologist who looked at his scans and determined that the tumor had a blood clot attached to it, which was pushing into his bowels. The tumor was the size of an NFL football.
Steve had surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 30th. Here is an update from his daughter Susanna:
Very long update on Dad:
First, he is out of surgery & the surgery was a success.
When they first put him under, his BP dropped & they gave him fluids. Once he had fluids, they realized he was very anemic. They gave him 2 units of blood.
The tumor was attached to every organ around it, but Dr. Carney was able to remove just the tumor & kidney. The tumor was huge and had a lot of necrotic tissue. He did not have to remove his colon or any other organs. He did come out of surgery with clean margins. Thank you Lord!!
However, they do believe that it is cancer and it is not kidney cancer like they had thought. They believe it is a very rare type of cancer because the biopsy did not come back for any cancer they had in their system. They sent it off for more testing and we won’t know exactly what kind it is for 2 weeks. It looks like he will have to get post surgery treatment. He mentioned sarcoma, leukemia, or lymphoma as possible types.
Dad is in recovery room with mom. He is in A LOT of pain. They are waiting for an ICU room to open up for him to be transferred to.
He has been moved to TICU room 2636 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah.
