My beautiful granddaughter, Clover has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
Our beautiful Clover had a bruise, it was about the size of a dime, it was on her stomach and we had no idea how she got it. We thought, “That’s a really weird place to get a bruise,” but Clover walks and plays and kids get bruises. Her parents decided to keep an eye on it; As the days went on, they took note of the bruise and how it was taking quite a long time to go away and in fact, it was getting bigger. Then, on Tuesday, August 20th, when Clover was 13 months old, Kaitlyn noticed that Clover’s lymph nodes were extremely swollen, in her groin area on both sides, and knew she needed to take her to the doctor. We all thought she might have an infection. The doctor drew her blood. About 20 minutes later, the lab tech came back and told us that she needed to draw the labs again.
It was then that Kaitlyn knew something was VERY wrong. Clover’s hemoglobin was 3.9 and her platelets were totally undetectable. We were advised to immediately take Clover to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital Emergency Room in Chicago.
A couple hours later, after more testing, it was confirmed that Clover has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
One day Clover was a perfectly healthy little girl with a bruise and the next, she was urgently sick and hospitalized and staring down 2 ½ years road to recovery. As our world came to a crashing halt, the rest of the world continued.
The initial pediatric Intensive Care stay of a week along with 2 ½ years of intensive treatment, more hospital stays planned (one this November for 28 straight days of intense chemotherapy infusions), physical therapy (because she is no longer walking or even standing and had x-rays on her legs and feet to see what is going on), prescriptions, and already had 2 surgeries and three blood transfusions will definitely generate expenses, some which are not covered by current insurance coverage that this young couple had never imagined they would need to plan for. Clover has been going and will continue to go to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital once a week. Unfortunately, Kaitlyn’s insurance only pays 60 percent after her extremely high deductible has been met. Thaddeus works for a company that employs less than 50 employees and does not offer medical insurance. Kaitlyn and Thaddeus both work full time and do not have any more paid time off (PTO) days as they have now used them all for the appointments and hospital stay as of today. As stated previously, in November she has a 28 day stay in the hospital scheduled for intense chemo therapy infusions.
Clover is currently on three different types of chemotherapy. She continues to have surgery for the spinal tap chemo. She also receives infused chemotherapy through her port that was surgically put in under her clavicle, and a shot in her thigh. She is also on several oral medications.
Thaddeus and Kaitlyn would like to thank everyone that has been sending prayers. They mean more than you can ever imagine.
Thank you to everyone who’s reached out, shown us love, and are prayer warriors for sweet Clover. We love you and your thoughtfulness and generosity means the world to us.
There has been an amazing outpour of support from amazing family and friends asking how they can help and support this family. We have generated this page to allow a place to assist this family.
A donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated as the cost of her treatments is rapidly accumulating beyond the parent’s means of their financial capabilities.
