Hi there, I’m Chaz, and I need your help.
In May of 2024, just as I finished a barbering program here in Chicago, I discovered a lump on my bicep. After seeing my primary care doctor and being told it was just a cyst, I was advised to keep an eye on it. But when the lump didn’t go away, I went back months later, hoping for a referral to a surgeon to have it drained. After more waiting, I finally had the procedure in November, just before the holidays.
I entered the exam room, ready for a simple fix, and the doctor began the procedure, using a local numbing agent. But moments after he started, I heard the words no one ever wants to hear: “I’ve never seen anything like this.” I remember being in shock. After some discussion, we decided to remove what we could and send it for a biopsy.
The following weeks were filled with uncertainty. I wasn’t prepared for what came next: a diagnosis of liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer. As you can imagine, this news shook me to my core. The timing couldn’t have been worse—right during the busy holiday season, and just as I was settling into the next phase of my career as a barber.
After many stressful appointments, scans, and tests, we were relieved to learn that the cancer hasn’t spread. We began radiation therapy in February, and I’ll continue treatment through March. After that, I’ll need surgery to remove the tumor and any remaining cancerous tissue. Though my doctors are hopeful, the recovery will be difficult. The tumor’s location could mean skin and muscle grafting, followed by months of physical therapy. I’m scared—honestly, I am. As a hairstylist of over 20 years, I rely on the full use of my hands. I just put myself through barbering school last year, while managing my own salon, and I can’t imagine losing the ability to do the work I love.
This is where I need your help.
The funds you donate will go toward covering my rent, travel expenses for appointments, food, and care needs during my recovery. I’m determined to make it through this, to continue working, and to live the life I’ve built here in Chicago. And when, not if, I survive this, I look forward to many more years of doing what I love.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read my story and for any support you can offer—whether it's a donation or simply sharing this with others.
