On July 16th, 18-year-old Cash Hartman was life flighted to the hospital after he was punched in the side of the head at Walmart, following a verbal altercation. Cash walked away from the suspect to end the verbal interaction. However, the suspect chased after Cash and threw a punch from behind, hitting him in the head at his temple. The blow caused his skull to fracture and cut a major artery, leading to significant bleeding and swelling in the brain. Shortly after the blow to his head, Cash had to be life flighted to a neurological institute to undergo emergency surgery to fix the artery in his head and relieve the pressure on his brain, which had caused him to become unconscious and unresponsive.
At this time, he has not awakened but is starting to be responsive to pressure/pain stimuli. His bleed was severe and he almost did not make it. Brain injuries are complex, and we have no idea how long his hospital stay will be, including physical therapy afterwards. Cash’s bills are growing each day. I’m hoping we can raise some money to help ease the financial burden he and his family now have to carry.
UPDATE ON CASH:
Cash is making great improvements. He has had bouts of consciousness since Monday recognizing faces and remembering facts like his name and DOB.
Cash started Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy Tuesday. (1 week post injury). The first two days were rough but today was a great day. Cash was able to stand (assisted) for the first time since his injury and assisted steps using a walker. He still cannot stand or walk on his own but we are confident he will be able to do these things shortly.
Today is also the first day he has been able to speak and be understood. Cash felt great this evening and said he feels awake finally. Even though his speech is slow he is very smart and knows exactly what’s going on around him.
Cash is still on a feeding tube until he can relearn to swallow and chew his food. Today he was able to eat some pudding although he couldn’t eat very much. He can also drink thickened water through a straw.
Cash is very grateful for everyone’s support and prayers. He’s has asked me to “tell everyone thank you”.
As for his family, we cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity. Love to you all.
