[GOAL REACHED!] Carey Goldberg's Public Records Request

Donation protected
GOAL REACHED! Please do not donate and huge thanks to all.

A donation to this fundraiser conveys the message: ""We do not want our school administration or Town Counsel to stonewall reasonable public records requests. Government transparency and compliance with the law are pillars of democracy."

On Oct. 16, 2023, longtime journalist and Brookline resident Carey Goldberg filed a modest public records request. She was seeking emails that could cast light on how the town's superintendent of schools came to send out flawed messaging -- as he admitted later in an apology -- related to the Oct. 7 attacks.

Over the 17 months (!!!) that she has pursued this request, including by filing three successful appeals with the state, the town has so far produced only the document shown in this image. After she enlisted pro-bono lawyers, the town told her she would have to pay $926.25 to receive 368 "potentially responsive emails."

She has now paid that sum herself, and is hoping for 92 donations of $10 each, to offset her expenditure and, most importantly, to show the superintendent, the Town Counsel and other officials that Brookline residents want transparency in their schools and local government.
