Support Candiss Autrey’s Recovery from a Motorcycle Accident
Hello all, below is a medical update from Candiss:
**Medical Update - Motorcycle Accident on August 16th**
Dear my Family and beloved Friends,
I wanted to take a moment to update you on my recovery journey after the motorcycle accident on August 16th. A lady made an illegal left turn right in front of me, which led to a series of challenges that I've been facing since then. This has been by for the hardest time in my life thus far but I’m a fighter!
I have spent over three months in the hospital, including three weeks in the ICU. During this time, I sustained multiple injuries: broke both of my legs (with the right leg broken in two places), broke both arms, broke my hip in six places, split my pelvic bone in half, broke my collarbone in two places, my tailbone, and three fingers. I have undergone 14 surgeries so far, including two skin grafts and two blood transfusions, with more surgical procedures still ahead.
Recently, I was discharged from the hospital after battling the same infection in my right leg caused by *Serratia marcescens*. This infection, which can stem from unsanitized medical equipment, dirt/water ( I picked it up from my accident. My lower shin/right foot was practically broke off my body) this stubborn infection has affected the bone in my leg and is adhering to the hardware that supports my foot. While this is a tough challenge, I’m determined to fight through it. I’m committed to maintaining a sterile environment, eating healthily, and staying hydrated.
Currently, I just finished my IV antibiotics which I had to take three times a day until January 23rd. Unfortunately, I am still facing complications, including missing two inches of my tibia, which will require a bone graft once the infection is under control. The road to recovery is long, and there is still a risk of losing my leg, but I remain hopeful and strong.
I am incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support from my friends and family during this time. Many of you have stepped up to help care for my dogs, and I truly appreciate your kindness. Having such a wonderful support system has made a significant difference in my spirits as I navigate this challenging journey.
Thank you all for your continued encouragement and support. I will keep you updated as I progress through my recovery.
With much much love,
Candiss
