After a decade in rescue, I could write a book. But I want to talk about what's been keeping me up at night lately. Madison County Sheriff's Office Animal Services is a small, underfunded shelter in the middle of rural Florida. The first time I personally went to the shelter I was gutted. The covered outdoor kennels are in a wooded area down a little dirt road. These dogs are literally in the middle of nowhere. That being said, they have some of the best humans in their corner. The Animal Control officers truly love and care about every animal that ends up there. But they can only do so much with the resources they have given to them.
We have taken in a lot of dogs from there into our rescue. But the ones we have to leave behind haunt me. It's soul crushing when you want to save them all but can't. I can't stop thinking about them waiting on their chance at getting out. What their daily life looks like. They live in a kennel 24 hrs a day waiting for attention. Waiting for human connection. They get leashed walked and loved on by the ACOs for a few minutes a day. But that's it. They have no way to play and just roll in the grass. That feeling of being free to run and relax outside. They don't know that. But we want to change that for them.
So, what can we do?
We can get these dogs a fenced in play yard! We are determined and dedicated to make this happen for the dogs that NEED US! Play yards are essential for exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation, and they make a world of difference for both the dogs and the staff. We have received the green light from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and the county has already helped prepare the site.
Now, we need YOUR support to raise $10,000 to construct two 20’x20’ play yards, complete with sunshades, privacy screens, soaking tubs, and fun toys to keep these dogs socialized to give them a much-needed break from their kennel. This will help them move to into a foster home more easily and get ready for their forever homes.
Your donation is not just a contribution; it’s a literal lifeline for these dogs. Every dollar is 100% tax-deductible to Fur Sisters since we are the ones raising the money to make this happen. If you can’t donate, YOU can still make a difference! Share our mission—spread the word for donations, volunteers, fosters, and adopters. Help us raise awareness about the struggle of these innocent souls living in conditions they didn't ask for or deserve.
We are always trying to raise money to take care of the dogs in our care. So, you know this means a lot to us if we are asking our supporters to contribute to this.
My heart is breaking for them, so this a way to help them on their journeys even if we can't take them all into rescue. They need us..and we won't look away. We will make this happen, for the love of dogs. Because we are their voice!
Madison County achieved No Kill awards in 2023 and 2024, boasting a remarkable 90% save rate with extremely limited resources and community involvement. It's amazing what they have done so far, can you imagine what they can do with our help? We want to keep this momentum up! The dogs and staff deserve our support. Donate and share - let’s get them a play yard and save more lives!
