René Zárate is a devoted father of two, a caring son, brother, uncle, friend, and grandfather-to-be. He has always been hardworking, generous, and creative—someone who could fix anything, turn the simplest things into something extraordinary, and brighten a room with his genuine smile.

In 2017, at only 49 years old, René was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease after what began as what he thought was a pinched nerve. Tremors soon followed, along with the fatigue, stiffness, and instability that changed his life forever. As the illness progressed, René lost not only his health and independence but also his livelihood. Parkinson’s forced him to give up the manual labor and long workdays that once supported his family. When he also lost his mother—his strongest supporter—the grief compounded his illness and left him facing life with even fewer resources.

And yet, in the midst of this darkness, René found a way to turn pain into purpose. Through tremors, fatigue, and endless pauses, he has poured his strength into writing and finishing his first book, The Dark Side of Parkinson's. This creative work has inspired him and given him something to look forward to each day—a way of transforming struggle into meaning. Writing has become both a lifeline and a mission: to leave behind a legacy that will help others feel understood, seen, and less alone.

The importance of this book cannot be overstated. For patients, it is a mirror of their hidden battles and an outstretched hand of solidarity in a world that often overlooks them. For families and caretakers, it is an intimate window into what their loved ones experience but may not have words to express. For doctors and health professionals, it offers the invaluable perspective of a patient’s lived reality—beyond clinical definitions and test results—reminding them that behind every diagnosis lies a person with dignity, fear, and resilience.

René’s story captures what many with Parkinson’s know too well: that the disease is not just tremors and stiffness. It is the insomnia that leaves nights endless, the anxiety that creeps in silently, the loss of smell and voice that slowly distances you from your world. It is the invisible symptoms—fatigue, depression, isolation—that weigh as heavily as the visible ones. By naming these realities, René gives voice to what is often left unsaid, and in doing so, he builds bridges of empathy and connection.

This book is not only about Parkinson’s. It is about life. It is about resilience, dignity, and the quiet courage of standing back up when everything feels like it is falling apart. It is about remembering that even when the body changes, the soul remains intact. In writing, René has chosen to resist despair by sharing his truth, offering hope to patients and families, and reminding us all of the power of human connection.

We are raising funds to help René publish The Dark Side of Parkinson's—covering the costs of editing, publishing, and distribution. Supporting this campaign means more than publishing a book. It means helping René transform his suffering into service, giving him the chance to give back to the community that has also been touched by this disease. It means showing him that his story matters and ensuring that his words reach the people who need them most.

With your support, his journey can become not only a testimony of endurance but also a beacon of compassion, resilience, and hope for countless families around the world. We will be happy to send out copies of the book to all supporters of his dream. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading, for sharing, and for believing in my dad’s story.
