Please Donate to Brad Wollman's Bionic Walkabout - Fundraiser Part 2

Please note that this is part two of the fundraiser and nearly half of the total fundraising goal was raised and used for part one. Funds were used to pay for medical expenses, appointments, medications, airfare, full time care and modifications to Brad's home for accessibility. Continue reading for details about part two, and below that you will find the original description for part one.

For those of you that are new to the story, Brad had an accident in his home that led to an operation on his leg, and the eventual amputation below the knee. With the help of the first half of this GoFundMe (part one) he was able to begin a journey that included travelling to the United States for surgery, after which he moved to a skilled nursing facility for recovery. After several weeks he was finally able to return home to Mexico.

Unfortunately, during this journey Brad experienced a serious setback after he was dropped at the skilled nursing facility soon after surgery, landing on his stump and opening up the stitches. This led to a MRSA infection which required intensive rounds of antibiotics and left Brad with physical and emotional trauma. On his return to Mexico he required full time care while he faced a drastically altered future and worked hard to regain quality of life.

After spending time focused on healing he has improved significantly and is now ready to begin the second part of his journey, one which he calls his Bionic Walkabout.

Brad has travelled to the United States a second time where he will now address several important medical issues and most importantly will be fitted and receive a new prosthetic leg!

On the bionic walkabout, Brad will:

  • See a dentist. Due to the service he has done for his community, he was gifted full mouth care and saw a dentist for five tooth extractions
  • Work with the Center for the Blind, receiving training and education related to retinal neuropathy which leaves him severely visually impaired.
  • See a cardiologist. He needs to have his pacemaker replaced.
  • GET A NEW LEG!!! On Tuesday Brad gets fitted for a prosthetic and begins classes to learn how to walk.

All of these steps involve significant expenses from the costs of his travel, staying in a hotel because he requires wheelchair friendly accommodations, food, transportation, medical fees, services, etc.

We are asking if you could contribute any amount, small or large to assist Brad in this super crucial chapter of his life and provide him with the best possible new start!

If you grew up with Brad, if you were in Oxidental during the 20 years that Brad was director of the YMCA or were part of the countless programs he ran, if you lived in Yelapa during his 20 years offering his hospitality and assistance, if you were in his photography circle, or maybe if you just experienced one of his fantastic stories, please assist him now in his time of need.

Please consider sharing a link to this GoFundMe with others, either by email or by posting to your social media accounts because every little bit helps.

Please Donate to Brad Wollman’s Medical Care Journey - Fundraiser Part 1

Our friend, Brad Wollman is in urgent need of your support. Brad needs help with surgery, and treatments and extended care for a crucial foot surgery. Beginning of October, Brad stepped on glass and cut his foot. He couldn’t walk; It wasn’t healing; complicated due to his diabetes condition. Infection and gangrene developed in the left foot. He went to hospital and had surgery on his foot. They cleaned out and removed the infected areas of his flesh on his foot and had to remove one of his toes.

The healing will take much time (months to year).. He is on strong antibiotics and will be released from hospital on Wednesday(10/16). Then he will fly to California for more extended care.. This operation has made a drastic change of his life. Sadly at this point, Brad may not be walking and will need daily supportive care. In addition, Brad has had a pacemaker for the past 5 years and has visual impairment due to macular degeneration. He has worked diligently to care for his condition and keep his quality of life and then this tragedy happened…and it has altered his life.

I am incredibly grateful to have Brad as a dear friend…He has helped me immensely with my yoga retreats at the Sky Temple. I know that he has helped many people over the years that have come to Yelapa and Vallarta. Perhaps Brad has impacted your life, supported your visit to Yelapa, taken you on a backcountry tour, picked you up at the airport, helped you around Vallarta, showed you kindness, taken you on an adventure into the small villages around Vallarta and introduced you to a side of Mexico we’d never experience without his guidance. All of us have been entertained by Brad’s amazing stories about his life in Mexico and we’ve been touched by his heart and humor.

Brad has worked his life in the service of others; if you have crossed his path or been impacted positively by him, please make a donation to assist with his next chapter of life.
A donation of any size is deeply appreciated and helps contribute to ease this time for Brad.
